NATO Members List: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was formed in 1949 by the United States, Canada, and several western European nations to ensure collective security against potential threats, notably from the Soviet Union. NATO is based on a system of mutual defense, whereby member countries agree to support each other if attacked.

Currently, NATO consists of 30 countries, evolving from the original 12 founders who signed the North Atlantic Treaty on April 4, 1949. The founding members are Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
