Police Ranks List: In Indian Police Services, the Director General of Police (DGP) is the highest rank officer. The rank of Commissioner of Police is held by Director General of Police (DGP) or Additional Director General of Police ADGP) or in some states and zone by Inspector General of Police (IGP) or Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP). The department of police has two types of police official, gazetted rank police officers and non-gazetted police officers.
The gazetted officers include all the Indian Police Service officers which are Group A officers of the cadre and all State Police Services officers of and above the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police. The ranks, posts and designations of all police officers vary from state to state as law and order is a state matter. But generally the following pattern is observed. The list of Police Rank is given below.

Indian Police Ranks List and Insignia of Gazetted Officers
Gazetted officers posts in Indian Police are higher authority ranks which includes Class 1 officers of Police department. All Police rank above Assistant Superintendent of Police comes under Gazetted posts. Indian Police rank list with their Insignia is arranged in a hierarchical order.

6 | Senior Superintendent of Police | SSP | Senior Superintendent of Police helps in prevention, investigation and detection of crime. He manages activities of Police stations and ensure their efficiency in controlling crime. He should pay surprise visit to the police stations. | |
7 | Superintendent of Police | SP | Superintendent of Police work and job profile is similar to Senior Superintendent of Police. He supervises that the prevention, investigation and crime detection and control in his jurisdiction are proper and efficient in police stations under his command. | |
8 | Additional Superintendent of Police | Addl. SP | Additional Superintendent of Police supervise all cases and all related investigations of police stations under his command. He is also responsible for the prevention of crime. | |
9 | Deputy Superintendent of Police | DSP | Deputy Superintendent of Police main objective is maintain law and order within district. Prevention of crime, investigation of crime and enforcement of special and local laws are also his responsibility. He visit the crime scenes and proceeds the investigation process. | |

Non-Gazetted Officer rank post of Indian post are those post which are not published in Gazette of India or any Indian state. Non Gazetted Police ranks list includes Inspector of a Police station and Sub Inspector and all other low ranked officials.
