What is the SIR (Special Intensive Revision)
The Special Intensive Revision is a detailed voter verification exercise conducted by the Election Commission of India to ensure the purity and accuracy of electoral rolls.As per Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, this revision is necessary because political parties have long raised concerns about incorrect and outdated voter lists. The last major SIR was held in 2002, and since then, lakhs of voters may have changed addresses, migrated, or passed away.In Phase 1, SIR was held in Bihar, where more than 68 lakh names were deleted from the rolls after verification.In Phase 2, the SIR has started in 12 States and UTs, including: Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Goa, Puducherry, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Lakshadweep.SIR Dates and Process in West Bengal

The Election Commission has released an “Indicative (Not Exhaustive)” list of documents that can be used during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). These documents help verify your identity, age, and residence.Below is the complete list of documents valid for SIR in West Bengal- Any identity card or Pension Payment Order issued to a regular employee or pensioner of any Central Government / State Government / PSU.
- Any identity cards, certificates, or documents issued by Government authorities, Banks, local bodies, or PSUs.
- Birth Certificate issued by a competent government authority.
- Passport.
- Matriculation / Educational Certificate issued by recognized Boards or Universities.
- Permanent Resident Certificate issued by the State authority.
- Forest Rights Certificate.
- Caste Certificate (OBC/SC/ST) or any similar certificate issued by the competent authority.
- National Register of Citizens (NRC) – wherever it exists.
- Family Register prepared by the State or local authorities.
- Land / House Allotment Certificate issued by a government department.
- Aadhaar Card – as per the Commission’s directions (Letter No. 23/2025-ERS/Vol. II dated 9.09.2025).
