Supreme Court Judge List 2025:- The Supreme Court of India is the highest court in the country, with a maximum strength of 34 judges. Currently, it has 30 judges, including the Chief Justice of India. Nine judges, including three women, took their oaths on 31 August 2021, under President Ram Nath Kovind. Justice N.V. Ramana became the 48th Chief Justice of India on 24 April 2021, marking the highest number of judges since India's Independence, at that time being 32. Mr. Justice Uday Umesh Lalit is the 49th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India.

According to Article 124 of the Indian Constitution, the Chief Justice and the judges of the Supreme Court are appointed by the President of India. H. J. Kania was the first Chief Justice of India during the presidency of Dr. Rajendra Prasad. 48th Chief Justice of India

Justice N.V. Ramana took his oath as the 48th Chief Justice of India on 24 April 2021. He served as a judge of the Supreme Court from 17 February 2014 until 23 April 2021. He was also the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court from 2 September 2013 to 16 February 2014 and acted as the Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court from 10 March 2013 to 20 May 2013. He was a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court from 27 June 2000 until 1 September 2013. His expertise lies in Constitutional, Criminal, Service, and Inter-State River laws. He has served as Panel Counsel for various government organizations and was the Additional Advocate General of Andhra Pradesh. He retired from his position on 26 August 2022.

49th Chief Justice of India

Mr. Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was sworn in as the 49th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India on 27 August 2022. The oath of office was administered by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

He enrolled as an Advocate in 1983 and practiced in the High Court of Bombay until 1985. He served as Special Public Prosecutor for the CBI in the 2G case. He was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court on 13 August 2014. He will retire on 8 November 2022.

Article 124 of Supreme Court Judge

  1. There shall be a Supreme Court of India consisting of a Chief Justice of India and other Supreme Court judges.
  2. Every Supreme Court judge shall be appointed by the President by warrant under his hand and seal, and shall hold office until he attains the age of 65 years. A judge may resign by writing to the President and may be removed in accordance with Article 124.
  3. To qualify for appointment as a Supreme Court judge, a person must be a citizen of India, have served for at least five years as a judge of a High Court, or have been an advocate of a High Court for at least ten years.
  4. A judge can be removed from office by the President upon an address from each House of Parliament that is supported by a majority of the total membership.
  5. Parliament may regulate the procedure and investigation for removing a judge.
  6. Every new Supreme Court judge must take an oath according to the Third Schedule before entering office.
  7. No individual who has served as a Supreme Court judge may practice law in any court or authority in India.
