Uttarakhand CM List 2026 update: Pushkar Singh Dhami is the current Chief Minister of Uttarakhand and continues in office as of September 2026. He first took charge on 4 July 2021 and was sworn in again on 23 March 2022 after the BJP won the assembly election.
In July 2026 he went past the 5 years and 5 days earlier put together by N. D. Tiwari and became the longest-serving chief minister in the young history of the state. Ten people have held this post since Uttarakhand was created on 9 November 2000. The full list with dates and party names is given below.
Uttarakhand came into existence when the hill districts of Uttar Pradesh were separated under the Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2000. The new state was first called Uttaranchal and took the name Uttarakhand on 1 January 2007.
As per the Constitution of India, the governor is the nominal head of the state, but real executive power sits with the chief minister. After the assembly election, the governor invites the party or alliance with a majority in the 70 member legislative assembly to form the government. The chief minister and the council of ministers stay answerable to that assembly.

Points Worth Noting From This List
Uttarakhand politics has moved fast compared to older states. A few points from the list explain why.
- Only one full term: N. D. Tiwari (2002 to 2007) is still the only chief minister who led a state assembly from its first day to its last.
- Three stints for one leader: Harish Rawat held the post three times between 2014 and 2017 because of the political crisis, the court orders and the floor test that followed.
- Two separate terms: B. C. Khanduri is the only leader to head the government twice in two different assemblies.
- Shortest run: Tirath Singh Rawat lasted 116 days in 2021 and had to step down before the six month deadline to enter the legislature.
- Two-party state: Every chief minister so far has come from either the BJP or the INC, with seven from the BJP and three from the INC.
- No woman chief minister: The state has not had a woman heading the government since it was created.
