Punjab RTO code list 2026 has all the PB codes that tell you which office registered a vehicle. Every number plate issued in Punjab starts with PB, and the two digits after it point to the exact registering office. Punjab Transport Department works as per Section 213 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, along with the Punjab Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1924 (amended in 1993).
A Punjab registration number is split into three parts. PB is the state code, the next two digits are the RTO or SDM office code, and the last four digits belong to the vehicle. Punjab has 11 RTA offices and 80 SDM offices, so one district can have more than one code. Amritsar, for example, has PB02, PB14, PB17, PB46 and PB63.
Punjab RTO Code List 2026 with City and Office Name
State Transport Commissioner leads the department, with the support of two additional State Transport Commissioners. Big cities have RTA offices, and smaller towns are handled by SDM offices. The code on your plate depends on the office that covers your address, not the one closest to your home.
Codes run from PB01 to PB91, and PB99 stands for SDM Dinanagar. The number also gives a rough idea of how old the office is, because codes were given out in the order the offices opened.

How to Check Punjab RTO Code and Vehicle Details Online
Vehicle details linked to any PB code can be checked on the central Parivahan Sewa portal. The steps are the same for private and commercial vehicles.
STEP 1 - Open the official Parivahan Sewa website at parivahan.gov.in and click on the 'Vehicle Related Services' option on the home page.
STEP 2 - Select Punjab from the list of states. The portal then opens the Punjab vehicle services page.
STEP 3 - Enter the full registration number, like PB10AB1234, and type the captcha code shown on the screen.
STEP 4 - Click on the proceed button. The next page shows the registering authority, RC status, owner name, insurance validity and fitness details.
STEP 5 - Match the two digits after PB with the table above to confirm the exact RTO or SDM office that issued the number.
Documents Needed for New Vehicle Registration at PB RTO
Registration at any Punjab RTO needs a set of forms and proofs. Missing even one paper means a second visit, so keep the originals and photocopies ready.
- Form 20 is the main registration application, signed by the vehicle owner. Dealers usually hand it over pre-filled for a new vehicle.
- Form 21 is the sale certificate from the dealer. Chassis and engine numbers on it must match the invoice.
- Form 22 is the roadworthiness certificate from the manufacturer. New registrations are often returned when this paper is missing.
- Proof of age and address means Aadhaar, passport, PAN card, utility bill or rent agreement showing the current Punjab address.
- Vehicle invoice is needed for imported vehicles to work out the value and the tax.
- Pollution Under Control Certificate is not asked for a brand new vehicle in its first year, but is needed for everything else.
- Vehicle insurance with at least third party cover, active from the date of registration.
- Temporary registration number issued by the dealer till the permanent RC is ready.
- Registration documentation from the manufacturer, if the office asks for it.
- Passport size photographs, two recent copies.
- Application registration fees as per the fee tables given below.
- Demand Draft of the road tax paid. For a new vehicle, the dealer usually handles this.
- Form 34 when the vehicle is financed, so the lender's name is recorded on the RC.
- Fees as per Rule 81 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.

- Issuance of duplicate Registration Certificate when the original RC is lost, damaged or stolen.
- Address changes in the Registration Certificate for owners who shift within Punjab or move in from another state.

- Issuance of national permits for commercial vehicles that run across state borders.
- Collection of road taxes, including the one time lifetime tax on private vehicles.
