Maharashtra CM List 1960 to 2026

Maharashtra was formed on 1 May 1960 after the old Bombay State was split into Maharashtra and Gujarat. Yashwantrao Chavan, who had been the Chief Minister of Bombay State since 1956, became the first Chief Minister of the new state. He held the post from 1 May 1960 to 19 November 1962.

The Governor invites the party or alliance with a majority in the 288-member Maharashtra Legislative Assembly to form the government and appoints its leader as the Chief Minister. Maharashtra has 288 assembly seats, the third highest in India, and 48 Lok Sabha seats, the second highest after Uttar Pradesh.
