Maharashtra Governor List 2026 has been updated after Jishnu Dev Varma took oath as the new Governor of Maharashtra on 10 March 2026. He is the 22nd Governor of the state and a member of the Manikya royal dynasty of Tripura. Before this posting, he served as the Governor of Telangana.
Governor is the constitutional head of a state. Under Article 153 of the Indian Constitution, every state has a Governor. Article 155 says the Governor is appointed by the President of India, and Article 156 states that the Governor stays in office as long as the President wants. The usual term is five years.
Maharashtra Governor List 2026
Executive power of the state is vested in the Governor under Article 154. This power can be used directly or through subordinate officers. A single person can also be appointed as Governor of more than one state, which is called additional charge.
Jishnu Dev Varma replaced Acharya Devvrat, who held additional charge of Maharashtra from 15 September 2025 to 9 March 2026. Before that, C. P. Radhakrishnan was the Governor from 31 July 2024 to 11 September 2025. He resigned to become the Vice President of India.
Raj Bhavan in Mumbai is the official residence of the Governor. Lok Bhavan in Mumbai and Nagpur are also used for official work. The Governor also serves as the Chancellor of state universities in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra Governor List from 1948 to 2026
Raja Sir Maharaj Singh was the first Governor of Bombay State, in office from 6 January 1948 to 30 May 1952. After Maharashtra was formed on 1 May 1960, Sri Prakasa became the first Governor of the new state. Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit was the first woman Governor of Maharashtra, serving from 28 November 1962 to 18 October 1964. Dr. P. C. Alexander was the longest-serving Governor, with a tenure of 9 years and 182 days from 12 January 1993 to 13 July 2002. The full list is given below.
