Refund Rules for Cancelled Trains in 2026

Indian Railways has revised its ticket cancellation rules from June 1, 2026. The new rules are stricter for last-minute cancellations, but they do not affect passengers whose train is cancelled by the railways itself.

When Indian Railways cancels a train, the full fare is refunded automatically. There is no cancellation charge and no need to file a TDR. The money reaches the same account or card used for booking, usually within three to seven working days.

For tickets cancelled by the passenger, the refund depends on how early the cancellation is done. The main points are given below.

  • More than 72 hours before departure, a nominal charge of about 25 percent is deducted and the rest is refunded.
  • Between 72 hours and 8 hours before departure, higher charges apply and the deduction can go up to around 50 percent of the fare.
  • Less than 8 hours before departure, no refund is given on a confirmed ticket.
  • Premium trains like Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat follow stricter norms, with higher deductions starting earlier.

If you often travel on waitlisted tickets, the rules are different. You can read the full details in this guide on Tatkal waiting list cancellation charges and refund rules.
